Everyone wants their website to bring more business. I bet that’s why “SEO Checklist” got your attention. Some think just “having the right kind of website”, or having “the right theme” will bring traffic.
Remember that movie, “Field of Dreams”?
“If you build it, they will come.”
Well, it’s a movie. If there’s any place that quote does not apply is on the web.
Here’s the thing, stop thinking a website is like the baseball field in the movie Field of Dreams. If you build it, they will not come.
You must promote your website in order for it to work for you. And if you’re thinking SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the path to riches, consider this: every one of your competitors thinks the same. In an increasingly tighter market, with an increasingly smarter algorithm, out-ranking other websites organically is becoming a losing proposition.
What you want to do is integrate SEO with other online marketing with, and with offline efforts. I mean social media marketing, email marketing, paper coupons, advertising, everything else. You want to dominate the market by brand recognition, not just arbitrary search results.
You also need a great, fast website. After all, if you have a slow, non-mobile friendly, poorly designed website without the content potential customers are looking for, what does it matter if you’re on the first page of Google?
I’ve even seen many small businesses and organizations waste a lot of resources on what I called “SEObsession” in this rant. That said, if you understand Search Engine Optimization is part of a marketing mix, and you have a website, and want people to find you through online searches, you need search engine optimization (SEO).
What is SEO?
The gist of it is search engine optimization is everything and anything you can do to help search engines identify your website as a reliable source of quality information.

One thing to understand about search engine optimization is that it is part science, and part art. I jokingly call it SEO Alchemy.
The reason? Search engines are very discreet about disclosing the specifics that affect their search engine results. You know, competitive advantage and all that. They’ll drop hints, for sure. Very good ones. But we really don’t know exactly what effect a certain factor has on search results.
So what we get is the informed opinion of experts in the field and independent tests. It’s a lot of information to research (that’s a guess-how-I-know story), the language is sometimes very technical, and there are many things to do.
On top of all this, anything one does to improve organic search engine results takes a while to show in our analytics. That is because it takes a while for search engines to crawl through the ever-expanding internet, put two-and-two together, and apply it to your website.
What can I do to get better SEO?
That is both the bad and the good news. Some of these things you may be able to do once, and in only a few minutes. Others must become a habit that you’ll follow for the life of your online business.
Some people may find this overwhelming and hire someone to do their search engine optimization. While I offer this service myself, I believe a lot of it can and should be done by the website owner. Ultimately, it’s the business owner that knows it more intimately.
